Kwanzaa Celebration

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Lauderdale joins millions of people worldwide in celebrating Kwanzaa each year. The concept of Kwanzaa is rooted in the ancient African tradition of the 'first-fruit harvest'. The model stresses the cooperative creation, gathering and sharing of good, gratitude for the bountifulness and beauty of the world and the commitment to to protect and preserve the earth as both a source of life and site of the sacred.

Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga who introduced seven Principles or the Nguzo Saba: Umoja (Creativity); Kujichagulia (Self-Determination); Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility); Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics); Nia (Purpose); Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith). We will celebrate each Principle in song, words or dance.
